In our series looking at people encountering Jesus and being changed as a result, we come to the Samaritan woman at the well in Sychar. What do we learn about Jesus in this story, and if, as Mark would contend, Jesus is the best and most accurate representation of what God is like, what might we need to change in our understanding of how God sees us?
In this year which has been declared in some quarters the Year of the Woman, we can look back at how Jesus treats a woman many times divorced and of a different culture and religion. It is one hundred years since sufragettes won the right for women to vote in Britain, but 2000 since Jesus came to find this woman and give to her (not her husband) the gifts of life and freedom. How has the church done with raising up and respecting women? How are we doing in leading the way for equality?
